Activities

Tarifa offers almost unlimited possibilities, be it for adrenaline-loaded water-sport addicts, golfers, cyclists, nature- and animal lovers (horse-back riding, bird- and whale watching) or those who like the blend of cultures in this unique spot.

Kitesurfing

Kiteboard Tarifa

Tarifa is THE European capital for kiting – be it on-shore Poniente days or flat-water with strong off-shore Levante, Tarifa offers unique conditions for every skill level. For beginners, countless kite-schools offer their services. In winter, a nice swell builds up for wave-kiters.

Top tips:
– If you are a beginner, take (private) lessons (recommendations here)
– Sign-up for a rescue service (e.g. sea guardians@Chiringuito Agua or Waves Bar)
– Drink a lot of water

Windsurfing

This is how it all started before Kitesurfing became the new “trend sport”. However, still today a large number of windsurfing enthusiasts are shredding it on the big days in Tarifa. Several surf stations offer latest equipment for rent.

Top tips:
– On very big days  with heavy swell, the bay underneath the dune is a good spot
– …

Horse-back Riding

IMG_2167Famous for the Andalusians and sunset rides on the beach of “Los Lances”, several stables offer longer tours and trecks into the back-country of Tarifa as well, particularly outside high season times.

Top tips:
– During high-season, the beach is very crowded with kite-/windsurfers, hence most beach tours take place late afternoon

– For advanced horse-back riders, custom tours in smaller groups (several hours or even full-day) into the back-country and surrounding pine forests are recommended

Golf

spain-hs-las-colinasFor those arriving from Málaga, there is an almost unlimited number of courses at your disposal on the way down to Tarifa. Whilst Tarifa does not have its own course, Montenmedio (towards Cádiz) or La Duquesa (direction Málaga) are both a mere 30 min. drive away.

Top tips:
– If time permits, play your courses of choice as you make your way down to Tarifa from Málaga – refer to the blog section for some course reviews
– Particularly the winter months offer fantastic conditions for Golf – what better way of recovering from a crazy wave kite-session to spend a day on solid ground chasing those birdies

Whale-/Bird Watching

Orca_Straight_GibraltarTarifa lies in midst of the Parque Natural del Estrecho – apart from the spectacular landscape, there is a vast variety of wild-life to watch. Most notably the unique whale population in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Top tips:
– Depending on the time of year, you can expect to see Orcas (July/August), pilot-/fin-whales (April – August) and lots of dolphins
FIRMM offers several daily whale watching trips starting at the port of Tarifa (April – October) – usually 3 daily tours, special trips on request
FIRMM was founded as a research station by Katharina Heyer (Swiss) – we have proudly “adopted” white-cap, a large bottlenose dolphin
